Event Details

Oh my, butterflies! Come learn about this amazing insect and help us create a monarch way station for their winter migration. We will be expanding our current garden with the assistance of the Grayslake Garden Club by adding plants that attract butterflies. You will have the opportunity to plant some blooms and paint a rock to add to the beauty of the garden!

First grade and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Migration:

The most amazing things about monarch butterflies is the enormous migration that North American monarchs undertake each year. Every fall, as cold weather approaches, millions of these delicate insects leave their home and begin flying south. They continue until they reach Southern California or central Mexico, nearly 2,500 miles away! Scientists think monarchs have been making this annual journey for thousands of years! But threats to their habitat and food source are making the migration more difficult, and monarchs are now on the endangered species list.

Conservationists encourage people to plant milkweed so monarch butterflies can lay their eggs and their caterpillars have food to eat. Help us create a safe space for these beautiful creatures!
