Kindergarten Readiness at a Glance:

When kids are getting ready for kindergarten, many families wonder about academic skills. But self-care and social and emotional skills are important for kindergarten readiness, too. For example, can your child dress themselves? Other kinds of skills kids are expected to have when they start kindergarten include:

  • Being able to say the alphabet and count to 10.

  • Kindergarten readiness includes motor skills like holding a pencil and using scissors.

  • Self-care like knowing their first and last name and not needing help in the bathroom are important kindergarten skills too.
