Event Details
At the Grayslake Library we strive to provide inclusive experiences for all individuals. People of all ages and abilities including, but not limited, to those on the autism spectrum, are welcome and encouraged to participate in our sensory-inclusive programs.
Roughly 15-20% of the population in the United States identifies as neurodivergent and traditional library settings can be stressful for those with sensory issues. The buzz and excitement of a public place can be too overwhelming for people with special needs, especially those with autism spectrum disorders.
Sensory Friendly Hour offers an opportunity for children and adults with special needs to use the library in a safe and welcoming environment. The event features everything available during regular hours as well as an opportunity to access the library’s resources in a quiet and sensory friendly environment. The lights will be dimmed and there will be quiet spaces available for anyone who might need them, in addition, there will be sensory activities available in The Hub and Youth Program Room. Sensory Friendly Hour is also a space for families and caregivers to network, share community resources, and develop trust.
